Ponte Clementino is located in Civita Castellana and connects the modern part of the town to the historic center, where landmarks like Forte Sangallo and the Cathedral can be found.
This monument also offers one of the most breathtaking views of the village.
The bridge spans a deep gorge at the bottom of which flows the Rio Maggiore, the stream that gives its name to the valley. It stands 40 meters high and stretches 90 meters in length. It was originally built in 1709 by order of Pope Clement XI, who commissioned the Roman architect Filippo Barigioni to design it.
After a devastating flood in 1861, the bridge was rebuilt and lowered from its original 54 meters to the current height of 40 meters. During that reconstruction, a beautiful travertine gate with a coat of arms was added—but it was demolished in 1911 to make way for the construction of the local tramway.
